Minimalist G/S conversion for the BMW R 1200 GS

The R120 Basic Kit gives the BMW R 1200 GS a clean, lightweight profile while evoking the character of classic G/S models. The front is deliberately minimalist, while the oil cooler is relocated in front of the engine. The motorcycle's comfort and handling are retained.

According to the manufacturer, the replacement components weigh a total of 6,4 kg less than the original parts. Part of this weight reduction concerns components located in front of the handlebars on the standard GS. This is intended to make the converted motorcycle easier to handle, particularly in the city and on mixed routes.

Design and Concept

• Minimalist front without the standard fairing
• Inspired by the style of classic GS models from the 1980s
• Alternatively compatible with the designated optional fairings
• Not compatible with a high front fender or Fenouil windshield
• Can be returned to its original configuration because the original parts are not modified

Tank Covers and Seat

• Pair of very lightweight tank covers made of special resin with carbon fiber reinforcements, graphics and a clear protective finish
• Tank covers with holes, screws, rubber pads, rear bracket and turned bushings for the front mounting points
• Right cover can be removed quickly for air filter maintenance
• Rear bracket with a slot for attaching a tank bag
• Matte black seat made of high-frequency embossed synthetic leather with hand-finished side stitching in cotton thread
• Seat including frame for installation on the original mounting points
• The original seat lock and therefore the vehicle key are retained

Three original M5 clips from the motorcycle are used for the upper connections of the tank covers together with the supplied M5 × 12 mm button-head screws. The original pointed M5 screws must not be used here, as they may damage the tank. The side R1200-GS logos are not included with the described tank covers and must be transferred from the motorcycle.

Fairing and Rear Components

• Very lightweight matte black side panels with R120-G/S decals and a clear finish
• Side panels including mounts, rubber components, screws and clear protective film for the frame
• Matte black rear fender for installation on the original mounting points
• Tail light with bulb and wiring compatible with the original connector, requiring no modifications to the motorcycle's electrical system
• Eyelets for the turn signal cables and mounting screws
• Lightweight side covers with a matte aluminum finish, including inserts and screws
• Steel luggage rack with durable powder coating and integrated passenger grab handles

The original R1200-GS logo on the rear fender is not included in the kit. The standard mounts for the Vario plastic cases cannot be installed directly on the kit; a separately available Unit Garage case frame is required. Original ADV aluminum cases with metal frames can be used in the R120-G/S configuration.

Front, Handlebars and Lighting

• Model-specific CNC-machined handlebar risers made of solid aluminum alloy with an anodized finish
• The original handlebar position and original upper section of the risers are retained
• Homologated Basic headlight including bulbs and mounting hardware
• Steel headlight frame with a highly durable powder coating
• Frame designed to accommodate the Basic headlight and designated optional fairings
• The original instruments can remain in their position
• Version without a mount for a high front fender

Oil Cooler Relocation and Tank Mounting

• Sturdy powder-coated steel fuel tank mounts replacing the removed original subframe
• Installed at the original mounting points and designed to accommodate the original rubber pads
• Low oil cooler kit for relocating the original oil cooler from below the headlight to the front of the engine
• Rubber hoses, connectors, clamps and new oil cooler mounts included
• The original tubular crash bar can be retained in combination with the low oil cooler kit

Installation and Compatibility

The kit is intended for BMW R 1200 GS models from model years 2004 to 2012 and is offered in versions for 2004–2007 and 2008–2012. The stated installation time is approximately four hours. Some deliberately retained original parts must be transferred from the motorcycle.

On an Adventure model, installation is only possible if the original plastic tank is replaced with the original tank from an R 1200 GS. Details may change as part of ongoing development; images may therefore show an earlier version.
